Thinking/Creating with Active Materials

Electroactive Polymers

Explanation of the EAP fabrication process, along with incites and knowledge discovered while working with this material.

With the help of EMPA (The Swiss Federal Laboratories for Materials Science and Technology) we were introduced a DIY process of constructing EAPs. Florian Wille explains this fabrication process, along with his own incites he found through the process of working with this material. The movement actuated in an EAP is unlike the mechanical movements of traditional methods of actuation, and can be likened more to artificial muscles. There is a subtle curve in both the initiation and completion of each constriction, giving it an inherently natural and organic movement. This process can also be reversed to produce electrical current i.e. applying stress to the membrane to produce energy.
